Proposed Legislation Would Make Diapers and Baby Products Tax-Free in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Senator Jesse James, R-Altoona, recently introduced Senate Bill 388 on August 9, 2023, which proposes a sales and use tax exemption on children’s diapers and baby care products such as cribs, strollers, safety restraint systems for cars, breast pumps, bottles, and changing tables. If passed, the bill would take effect approximately three months after the governor signs it.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue’s website, the state currently imposes a 5% sales tax rate and a 5% use tax rate. Additionally, more than 60 counties impose a 0.5% local sales tax. Enacting this bill would prevent the above state and local taxation by making diapers and baby care items sales and use tax exempt.
